Altitude

Nairobi lies at an altitude of 5,500 ft above sea level and has no real variations in the climate. Average temperatures range from 21°C in January to 16°C in July.

During this month the long rains season (March to May) have ended and the month marks the start of the cold spells of July to August. It is advisable to carry warm clothing during this season.

Customs

Visitors are allowed limited amounts of duty free items, but they must be declared. Professional articles and samples, including those imported by businessmen and commercial travellers, items like cameras (film) photographic equipment, radio equipment and sound recording apparatus, and equipment imported by foreign correspondents or any other specialized materials imported for professional use or sporting fire arms are subject to special permit.

Visa Requirements

All visitors to Kenya must hold valid passports. Citizens of countries that require visas for Kenya should obtain these beforehand at the appropriate Kenyan diplomatic or consular offices abroad. UN Laissez-Passer holders are exempt from visa requirements.

Travellers arriving in Kenya coming from infected areas would require a valid international certificate of vaccination against yellow fever. The Yellow Fever vaccination card is a mandatory requirement to travel to Kenya.

Kenyan representative to Rome has offered to facilitate issuance of visas to participants who would want to attain delegate group visas through their permanent representatives in Rome.
Arrangements have been made for visa provision on arrival for those delegates who cannot get them in their home states. Authority letters will be sent to those delegates to enable them to travel to Kenya.

Arrangements at the Airport

Participants are advised to provide advance notice, at least 3 weeks prior to arrival, of the name of carrier, flight number, time of arrival and other related information to the Government Liaison Officer in Kenya. This will ensure that they are properly met on arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Participants are advised to mark their luggage clearly in order to facilitate identification.

The authorities of Kenya will make special arrangements for participants on their arrival (setting an Information Desk at the arrival terminal), to assist them with formalities regarding immigration, visas, customs, collection of luggage, and to provide participants with transport to their respective hotels. Similar arrangements will be made at the end of the Conference.

All conference participants are advised to finalize, at an early date, their return travel arrangements. Immediately on arrival in Kenya, participants should contact the Travel Desk at the Conference premises for special internal visits and for the reconfirmation of their departure date and time.

FireArms Clearance

Any VIP or member of any delegation who may be accompanied by bodyguards carrying firearms are advised to seek clearance for the firearms from the Kenya Government prior to departure.
The following details are necessary for firearms clearance:

  • Name of the close protection officer.
  • Passport Number.
  • Type of weapon and serial Number.
  • Calibre.
  • Number of ammunition.

This could be done through the respective embassies/High Commissions in Nairobi or through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kenya.

Banking and Foreign Exchange

There is no restriction on the amount or kind of foreign currency or travellers cheques which may be imported to Kenya. The foreign exchange desk and banks will provide the necessary information on exchange rates and transfer procedures. A bank/foreign exchange desk will be available on the conference premises. The monetary unit is the Kenyan Shilling (KES). At the time of going to press, the exchange rate is approximately 67 KES to 1 United States Dollar.

Medical and Health Services

First aid services will be available at the conference premises.
All delegates must get medical insurance covers and those on medication should remember to carry their medication.
